LASIK Eye Surgery

Serving Sunset Park, Brooklyn | Flushing and Long Island City, Queens
LASIK has helped millions of people achieve clear vision, and it remains one of the most commonly performed elective procedures worldwide, with patient satisfaction rates consistently above 96%. At NY Partners Ophthalmology, our experienced surgical team offers personalized LASIK evaluations to help you determine whether laser vision correction is right for you.

What Is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that permanently reshapes the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to correct the refractive errors that cause blurry vision. The procedure corrects nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better and experience a dramatic reduction in their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

The surgery itself typically takes about 15 minutes per eye. Numbing drops are used, so discomfort is minimal, and most patients notice improved vision within 24 hours.

How LASIK Works

During the procedure, your surgeon creates a thin protective flap in the outer layer of the cornea using a femtosecond laser. The flap is gently folded back to expose the underlying corneal tissue, and an excimer laser then removes a precisely calculated amount of tissue to reshape the cornea. Once the reshaping is complete, the flap is repositioned, with no stitches required. The cornea holds the flap naturally as it heals.

LASIK Candidacy

LASIK is an excellent option for many people, but not everyone is a candidate. Our surgeons perform a thorough pre-operative evaluation before recommending the procedure. Good candidates generally meet the following criteria:

Age:

At least 18 years old, with a stable prescription for at least one to two years

Prescription range:

Within the FDA-approved treatment parameters for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism

Corneal thickness:

Sufficient corneal tissue to allow safe reshaping

Eye health:

Free from active eye disease, infections, keratoconus, or severe dry eye

General health:

Conditions that affect healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune diseases, may impact candidacy

Not pregnant or breastfeeding:

Hormonal fluctuations can alter corneal shape and prescription stability
During your LASIK consultation at NY Partners Ophthalmology, your provider will use advanced diagnostic tools to map your corneal topography, measure corneal thickness, evaluate tear film quality, and assess your full prescription, giving you a complete picture of whether LASIK is the right procedure for your eyes.

LASIK Alternatives

If you're not an ideal candidate for LASIK, other vision correction options may be right for you, including:
EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): an additive lens placed inside the eye; an excellent option for patients with thin corneas or high prescriptions
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): similar to LASIK but without creating a corneal flap; preferred for patients with thinner corneas
Refractive lens exchange: replaces the eye's natural lens with an IOL, often considered for patients over 40 who also have presbyopia
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction): minimally invasive laser vision correction performed through a small incision without creating a corneal flap; an option for patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism.

LASIK Recovery

Most patients return to normal daily activities within one to two days. Vision stabilizes over the following weeks as the cornea finishes healing. You will have follow-up appointments at 1 day, 1 week and subsequent visits as needed post-procedure. Driving, swimming, and wearing eye makeup should be avoided during the initial healing period per your surgeon's instructions.
